Scholarships abound for caregivers to pursue nursing degrees, thanks to senior care reform

The senior care reforms passed by Minnesota lawmakers last year has allowed many senior care facilities across the state to offer scholarships to caregivers to assist them as they work toward a degree in nursing. We’ve shared how these scholarships have benefited some caregivers in the Spotlight section on

We recently heard from Lakeview Methodist Health Services in Fairmont about the scholarships they have already awarded to staff members and their gratitude for receiving them.

Here’s what Lakeview Methodist Health Services had to share:

“A few years ago, two international students met at Normandale Community College, got married, and decided to pursue degrees in nursing.  Their search for a nursing school brought them to Presentation College’s Fairmont, MN campus, which is 2.5 hours south of their Twin Cities home.

Looking for jobs to help with college expenses, Presentation College sent them to Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center where they became employed as certified nursing assistants. They later became scholarship recipients.

Today, Dawit works as a Registered Nurse (RN) at Lakeview. Tharu will graduate as an RN this month and then start her career as a Lakeview Methodist RN.

Also enrolled in RN programs through our scholarships are Darla, Robin and Karla – all local Fairmont citizens who lovingly care for Lakeview Residents in their present roles as nursing assistants. They soon will be able to add RN behind their names as well.

One of our RNs, Dani, came to Lakeview already having graduated as an RN, but with monthly college loan payments taking a good bite out of her paycheck.Lakeview Scholarship Participant Danielle

Thanks to the senior care reform legislation passed last year, we could come to the rescue for Dani and take over those loan payments!

These amazing people will be providing care as RNs for many years to come because of their own dedication and sacrifice, but also in part to our Minnesota legislators making scholarships and loan payments a priority for nursing home employees!”

Here are the expressions of gratitude from the scholarship recipients:

“Receiving this scholarship meant a lot to me because it helped me with both tuition and textbooks. I graduated last year with a very less amount of student loans and am currently working as a registered nurse at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center. I’m very thankful for Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center for granting me the scholarship because I do not have to worry about how to repay the student loans.” – Dawit

“I am a mother of two, have two jobs and go to school full time.  The scholarship program has helped me so much.  Due to the scholarship, I do not have to work as much so I can focus on my studies and spend quality time with my family, which is very important.  I really do not know what I would do if I did not have the scholarship.  Thank you Lakeview Methodist and also all the staff for being so great.” – Darla

“The scholarship has helped me greatly because my dad lost his job last year.  Without the scholarship, I wouldn’t have been able to go to Presentation College and stay home closer to my family.  I would have to move away if I didn’t have enough money to pay my tuition at Presentation.  I am so honored to have been chosen as one of the people to give the scholarship to and for that I will forever be grateful, since my parents did not have enough money to help me.” – Karla

“The scholarship through Lakeview Methodist Health care Center immensely helped me to complete my nursing degree with minimum student loans.  By reducing financial concerns, the scholarship meant more time for studying and learning, which helped me to get better grades in nursing classes. I never had to worry about how to pay for school or for my books. I’m very thankful for Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center for granting me the scholarship opportunity to succeed in my education at Presentation College.” – Tharu

“Lakeview’s scholarship program has helped me in so many ways, and I’m very thankful that they chose me as a recipient. By receiving the scholarship from Lakeview, I have been able to go back to school to reach my goals and dreams. This has alleviated the financial burden of student loans and figuring out ways to have to pay for classes. Their assistance has also alleviated the stress of how I was going to pay for textbooks and college fees including tuition. This program has allowed me to be able to study without stress or anxiety of finances. I also have time to spend time with family without having finances on my mind. Lakeview has a requirement to work a certain number of hours to keep the scholarship, which I also appreciate as it helps to keep my work ethic current with the standards of the facility. Lakeview is always willing to work with my class schedule and support my education. Without Lakeview’s scholarship program, I would not be back in school following my dreams to become a nurse. I appreciate all of what Lakeview has done for me, and I strive to make them proud of my efforts and for them to confident in their decision to support me through college.” – Robin

The senior care reform legislation was supported by Rep. Bob Gunther who represents Fairmont in the Minnesota House of Representatives.
