Walking through the aging journey with mom

Having worked as an administrator at Maple Lawn Senior Care for 26 years in Fulda, Minnesota, Arlan Swanson says it’s interesting to be on the other side of long-term care. When his 90-year-old mother fell and broke her hip, he experienced senior care from the perspective of a patient’s family.

Arlan says seeing his mom do well and recover with a great attitude has been a rewarding part of the journey. “She was joking with the doctors on her way into surgery,” Arlan recalls.

His mother’s surgery went well and she is in physical therapy. Now, Arlan is helping her develop a safer living environment at her apartment.

We will all need at least a little care at some point in our lives, says Arlan, so senior care issues should matter to every Minnesotan. “We want to be loved and respected in the journey.”

Thank you for sharing your story with us, Arlan. Your voice is vital as we advocate for awareness and address the needs that accompany the reality of a rapidly aging society.
